Youth strength training in Apollo Beach

Most kids get told to run laps and hope something sticks. I coach the other way around. Young athletes learn to move first, then they get strong, and the sport gets easier because the body underneath it finally holds up.

What training looks like by age

Ages 7 to 11

Bodyweight first. Skipping, crawling, sprinting, jumping, landing softly, and learning to hold a plank without their hips falling apart. It looks like a game and it builds the coordination everything else sits on.

Ages 12 to 14

The barbell and dumbbell patterns get introduced with light load and a lot of repetition. Squat, hinge, push, pull, carry. We keep the weight boring on purpose until the shape of the lift is automatic.

Ages 15 to 17

Real strength work for athletes who play a sport, plus speed, change of direction, and the conditioning their season demands. Off season we build, in season we maintain and protect the joints.

How I keep it safe

  • Every athlete gets a movement screen before they touch a weight, and the plan is written from what that screen shows.
  • Load only moves up when the technique holds for every rep of a set, never because a birthday happened.
  • No maxing out kids. Strength shows up in clean reps, not in a one rep max photo.
  • Sessions are coached the whole way through. Nobody is sent to a corner with a printout.
  • Parents are welcome to stay and watch any session.

How 1 on 1 works

Parent questions

Is lifting weights safe for kids?

Yes, when it is coached. Supervised strength training is one of the most studied and lowest injury activities a young athlete can do, and it is far safer than the sport they already play. What causes problems is unsupervised loading and copying what they saw online.

What age can my child start?

Seven. That first block is bodyweight, sprinting, and coordination. Loaded barbell work starts later, once the movement holds up.

Small group or 1 on 1?

Both. The kids bootcamp is a small group and it suits most kids because they push each other. A young athlete training for a specific sport or coming back from an injury usually does better 1 on 1.

What does it cost?

Kids bootcamp sessions are $20 to drop in and $85 for a five pack. Private 1 on 1 youth sessions start at $60, and a weekly pack brings it to $45 per session.

Where do sessions run?

Apollo Beach, with bootcamp locations across Waterset, Riverview, Brandon and Tampa depending on the day.

Will this make my child bulky or stunt their growth?

No. That growth plate story has been studied for decades and never held up. Coached strength work builds bone density, tendon strength, and the body control that keeps them on the field.
