Metabolic Stress

The burn and pump from accumulating lactate and metabolites in a working muscle.

Training1 question answered

Definition

Metabolic stress is one of the three drivers of hypertrophy (alongside mechanical tension and muscle damage). It builds during higher rep sets with short rest — the burning, swollen 'pump' feeling — and contributes to growth through cell swelling and hormonal signaling.

Real questions

How do I maximize the pump?

12–20 reps per set with 30–60 second rest on isolation exercises produces the strongest pump and metabolic stress.
