Losing fat after 40 without wrecking yourself
What actually changes after 40, what does not, and the training and eating that works when you have less recovery to spend.
The story people arrive with is that their metabolism broke somewhere around their fortieth birthday. It did not. What changed is smaller and more fixable than that.
What actually changed
You move less. Not on purpose, but a desk, a commute and kids take out most of the walking you used to do without noticing. You sleep worse and shorter. You have carried less muscle every year you did not train. And you recover slower, so the same week of training costs you more.
None of those are age doing something to you. They are four things you can put back.
Your metabolism did not betray you. You just move less than you did at 25 and you have not adjusted for it.
Lift, and keep the numbers moving
Three days a week, full body, working weights not maximum weights, and the load goes up when the reps say it should. Muscle is the thing that keeps your metabolism where you want it and keeps you off the floor at seventy.
Two hard sessions and two easy ones will beat four hard ones you cannot recover from. That is the main adjustment after 40, and most people get it backwards.
Eat like you want to keep the muscle
Protein around one gram per pound of goal bodyweight. Fat not crushed. Carbs around the days you train. A slower deficit than you would have run in your twenties, because a hard cut on top of poor recovery is how people get hurt.
Walk
Boring, and it is the single biggest lever most people over 40 have left. Eight to ten thousand steps, spread through the day, no equipment, no recovery cost. It replaces the movement your life quietly removed.
The joints
Old shoulders, bad knees and a back that goes out do not stop any of this. They decide which movements we use. Trap bar instead of barbell, neutral grip instead of flat bar, step ups instead of deep split squats. There is a version of every lift that your body will let you do.
